Two new ERC projects in Euskadi

In 2007, the European Commission created the European Research Council (ERC) with the aim of promoting excellent basic science in Europe, supporting the best researchers from all fields and of any nationality who wished to continue their research at the frontiers of knowledge.

The projects supported by the European Research Council have great prestige among the international scientific community. In fact, the success in obtaining these grants, which cover all scientific areas, is an indicator of excellence at an international level.

Last month we have known the results of the ERC Starting call, a modality aimed at talented researchers, who have between 2 and 7 years of scientific experience and who have already performed excellent supervised work, are prepared to work independently, and have the potential to become research leaders.

In this call, two of the grants have been for Ikerbasque researchers:

  • Luca Unione (CIC bioGUNE): The funded project presented by Luca Unione is called "Glyco13Cell" and aims to describe the key interactions between viruses and our cells at the highest possible resolution. They will combine methods from cell biology, synthetic chemistry, and biophysical techniques to outline viral infection mechanisms at atomic resolution.
  • Daniel Reta (UPV/EHU): The project led by Daniel Reta “RadicalProtON” aims to establish new ways to introduce magnetic properties into organic molecules and study their applications in drug design, as well as in the fields of molecular optical properties and spintronics.
