In an increasingly complex and eclectic world, seeking synergies and common ground among researchers from different fields of knowledge is key to advancing science. These connections can help propel the research they are conducting. For this reason, Ikerbasque has brought together 200 international researchers in Getxo, who carry out their work in universities and research centers in the Basque Country, with a dual objective: to identify common ground that will help promote science in Euskadi in the coming years and to discuss the challenges they will have to face in the future.
Adolfo Morais, Deputy Minister of Science and Innovation of the Basque Government, accompanied by Fernando Cossio and Miguel Ángel Arocena, Ikerbasque’s Scientific Director and Managing Director respectively, was in charge of opening the event. During his opening remarks, Deputy Minister Morais referred to Ikerbasque’s 18-year journey, highlighting how the Basque Foundation for Science has become firmly established. With its 402 researchers, it is now the most significant talent attraction program not only in Euskadi but also across Spain.
For his part, Ikerbasque's Scientific Director, Fernando Cossío, emphasized the importance of maintaining strong commitment and investment in research. In the long term, research generates new products and services that help Basque companies improve their competitiveness, creating wealth and employment. In the short term, investment in research yields immediate returns in the form of funding for the Basque Country, which translates into investment and jobs.
Following the opening, Ikerbasque researchers, organized into working groups and drawing on their extensive research experience, presented their current lines of work, with a special focus on identifying the needs that will drive their present and future research. In total, 22 researchers participated, representing a wide range of fields such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, quantum technologies, and new materials.
