Jakinaldia, the new science festival, will celebrate its first edition on October 17 and 18

The Basque Government’s Department of Science, Universities and Innovation will hold the first edition of Jakinaldia—a new annual science outreach festival—on October 17 and 18 in Donostia/San Sebastián. This initiative aims to bring science closer to the public through a diverse cultural program that combines knowledge, creativity, and entertainment in an accessible and engaging format for all audiences.

Jakinaldia is part of the Department’s broader strategy to promote the social dissemination of knowledge, place science in the public sphere, and advance toward a more informed, participatory, and democratic society.

Kuantika Jaialdia: A Festival to Celebrate a Historic Milestone

This first edition, called Kuantika Jaialdia, is dedicated to the centenary of quantum physics and features a program that includes music, science outreach, magic, theater, and humor.

The celebration coincides with the arrival of the IBM - Basque Country, the most advanced quantum computer in Europe, whose official inauguration will take place on October 15 at the new Ikerbasque building in Donostia. This infrastructure will position the Basque Autonomous Community at the forefront of global quantum computing, integrating it into IBM’s worldwide quantum network, which currently operates only in Japan and the United States.

The festival will take place at the Higher School of Music of the Basque Country (Musikene) and will feature two distinct sessions:

Friday, October 17 (6:00 p.m.) – Adult Audience

  • Science monologue “Quantum Tales” – Enrique F. Borja
  • Musical piece “LoCuanto Musical” – Jon Esnaola
  • Quantum magic with Tor and Txoborro Magoak
  • Science comedy show “Absurd Matter” – Big Van Ciencia
  • Bertso Kuantikoak session with Jone Uria and Alaia Martín

Saturday, October 18 (5:00 p.m.) – Family Audience

  • Theater play “Quantum Adventure”
  • Magic show with illusionist Marsel
  • Interactive show “Clowntifics” – Big Van Ciencia (experiments and humor)
Birth of the Quantum Mile

The installation of the IBM Quantum System Two on the Ibaeta campus represents a quantum leap for the city.

To raise awareness about the new quantum computer and one of Europe’s most active hubs for quantum research, the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation has launched the Quantum Mile—a scientific and technological route that invites citizens to discover the local research community and the mysteries of the quantum world.

The Quantum Mile can be enjoyed in two ways:

  1. Marked walking route: with educational infographics placed at the entrances of various research centers.
  2. Virtual route: allowing visitors to explore quantum laboratories and get a close look at the work of researchers.

In addition, on October 24 and 25, the Quantum SCAPE Street experience will be offered—a free outdoor escape room for groups of 6 to 8 people, animated by a team of professional actors. It’s a fun way to learn about science and quantum technology while solving puzzles throughout the city.
